Into the woods

During our last trek in The Grand Tetons we found ourselves eating fresh caught lake trout we had fished ourselves. Our friend Andy from Athens was kind enough to be our guide through this leg of our journey. We visited Spokane during our trip from Jackson to the Northwestern Peninsula. There is much more to say about this, but I’m afraid that we have run short on time.

Today we begin our journey into Olympic national Park. We will begin by car camping at the Sol Duc Hot Springs, and from there we hope to find a back country spot to go to for a few days. After that we are going to continue down the 101 to the beach and camp at one of the car spots there. From there we will go back through the bottom edge of Seattle and over to George, Washington to a three day concert at the Gorge Amphitheater. It won’t be until after all this that we will find ourselves in civilization again.

Have a fantastic week! We will.

I wish my car had cruise control…

We drove all the way from Edwards, CO to Jackson, WY today. Most of Wyoming is incredibly flat and straight and boy is my foot tired. Cruise control would have been a miracle on those roads. We are now very comfortable in our hotel room in Jackson and I’m going to be getting a foot rub very soon.

We stopped for lunch in Steamboat Springs, which is about 2 hours north of Edwards. Once we got into the downtown area we decided to get out on foot and stretch our legs for a while to find somewhere to eat. Well, there were tons of options in Steamboat, but our legs got tired in front of a bar and grill so we decided to eat there. I knew we were in trouble as soon as we started to go downstairs into a very cold and very dark place. Once my eyes adjusted to the light, I saw that it was exactly what I’d been afraid of – a sports bar. The only light seemed to be coming from the ridiculous number of TVs surrounding the walls. I almost wanted to turn and walk back outside into the light, but by this point we were both too hungry to look around any further. We placed our orders and stared at the TVs while we waited for our food to arrive. Then our food came out. It was beautiful. It was delicious. It was fresh. The chicken tacos that we ordered were dusted with cilantro, lime juice, avocado, tomatoes, and nothing else. They went well with our absolutely mouthwatering bison burger on an obviously handmade bun. Overall we had a quality meal from a dark, dank, and delicious bar. Only in Colorado.

On the Road again…

Well it’s been a fun week on the road.  We spent three nights in Fayetteville resting up from our first long drive.  (Matt is still having to take it easy on his back. )  Fayetteville is a small college town like Athens.  Home of the Arkansas razorbacks or “Hogtown” .  Fayetteville has a downtown district filled with eclectic bars and restaurants. The centerpiece is a small arts center which features an outdoor amphitheater and rose garden in addition to the museum and theatre inside.  We rested up and entertained ourselves with the cats of the couch-surfers we were staying with.

We got on the road again early friday morning and drove through Oklahoma and Kansas on our way to Denver.

Along the way we saw  wind farms, followed by  an awesome storm in Kansas, followed by an impressive rainbow once we arrived in Colorado.

Once we arrivd in Denver we were greeted by Kyle, one of Matt’s friends from high school.  Kyle made a great host.  His basement apartment was unexpectedly cozy and the company was top notch.  We got to see the  Capital Hill section of Denver from a local’s perspective.

From there we went to Boulder, Colorado in the foothills of the Rockies.  Boulder is home to an impressive assortment of restaurants, local breweries, street performers and shops of all kinds.  No matter how many times we come it feels like we never even tap the surface of all this town has to offer.  This time, we went to Jax Fish House with Kyle  and his friend Sheah from Denver along with our friend Alayna (from Athens who just moved to Edwards Colorado.)  In Boulder you can always count on having good food and a good time (just don’t plan to count your money).

While we were staying near Boulder we visited the nearby town of Nederland.  Nederland houses the reservoir which creates the hydroelectric power supply for all of Nederland and Boulder County.  It was really great to look around and see all of the sustainable energy being produced and used in the area.

We are currently resting up at Alayna’s new home in Edwards, CO.  Tomorrow we get back on the road to head up to the Grand Tetons.

Leaving home

Well, we finally packed everything up and left Athens.   Check out the good omen for our journey!

Our last few minutes in town gave us a rainbow with no rain!

We are staying in Atlanta with our friend Margaret tonight. Tomorrow morning we continue our trip westward to Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Still gettting ready to leave Athens…

Wow, I never thought we had so much stuff left to do!
